You may have read Mikey Nix’s,  “7 Horrible Lessons from my Avalanche Refresher on Friday”,  article here on Biglines last month .  Here’s a fun recap podcast highlighting the day that was. It made some of us reassess our life’s choices.  Right Mike?

We all love the mountains.  They’re pretty awesome.  We also know that they need to be respected and that anything can happen without notice.  The LPP gets the new year started off on a note of safety and responsibility with a bit of good fun mixed in.   Today’s guests, Simon Thomson and Chelsea Sullivan, are guides based in Whistler and they train groups in snow safety.

Earlier this season Simon and  Chelsea  conducted a free snow safety skills training session on Blackcomb hosted by Phil Lake and the Whistler Salomon Community program.  They invited a number of local rippers, pro skiers and their friends to come out and spend a day honing and refining  backcountry skills.   In spite of it being a 20cm, bluebird powder day, a large amount of people showed up to participate in several stations including  probing and digging exercises and beacon searches. Most of the skiers who came out already know how to do all of these things but also know the importance of practice and staying on top of that knowledge.

In this episode we talk about the day that was and discuss what we learned from it and how to take that experience with us into the mountains that we love.
