Whitewater Ski Resort’s first ever Community Day last Friday proved to be a resounding success with the resort raising over $10,000 to give back to the community. Locals from Kaslo to Castlegar and south to Salmo enjoyed the great snow conditions for only $10 and each of those dollars resulted in a $5540 donation for both the Nelson Cares Society and Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaries (A.A.B.B.S.), not to mention the abundance of food donated to the Nelson Food Cupboard. With the most total snowfall to date this season out of all the resort in the West, an accumulation of 540 cm / 212 inches and a snow base hovering around 2 meters, the fortieth season could not be off to a better start.
The fun does not stop on Friday. Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 17 marks the 7th annual Winter Carnival at Whitewater Ski Resort. A full weekend is planned with kid scavenger hunts, snow sculpting contests and the Snowball Apres with an incredible buffet dinner put on by the chefs at Whitewater, live music by LINT, a torchlight parade and fireworks. And that is only Saturday! Sundaybrings Avalanche Awareness, more marshmallows and the Gerick’s Summit Cup. For those in Rossland that want to join the Saturday festivities, Mountain Shuttle is running a shuttle for the day.
And the excitement is not over. This coming Friday, January 15 marks the official 40th Anniversary Celebration. The party kicks off at the resort with return of the beloved Master Blaster competition, fortieth style, followed by an Old School Ski Moves contest in the terrain park. There will be other contests such as Oldest Season Pass and Most Number of Season Passes, food specials and Nelson Brewing Company’s special Whitewater anniversary beer Bent Pole on tap. There will be live music in the lodge byDirt Floor, the band that holds some of the same talent that helped to create the music behind the anniversary film “40 Years Young” which will be shown Friday at the resort as well. What better way to enjoy the story told by the talented team at Freeride Entertainment then in the very lodge that was built by hands of the community forty years ago? There is still time for you to tell your story as the Dear Whitewater Instagram Contest runs until this Friday too. The celebration moves into the evening at Mike’s Place Pub who has teamed up with Nelson Brewing Company for the Get Bent Pole (After) Party. A free event, Vinyl Ritchie will be spinning beats throughout the evening and there are grand prizes for the Best Bent Pole as well as the Best Duct Tape Costume.
So join us for an action packed, fun-filled weekend at Whitewater Ski Resort Friday through to Sunday. For more information on events at Whitewater visit our Events Calendar at www.skiwhitwater.com.
