Golden BC’s Kicking Horse Mountain Resort opened yesterday and what an opening it was! Putting an official start to what has already been a November to remember for the 2015/16 season, Kicking Horse opened with the earliest preview weekend in recent memory due to having such great conditions.
True dedication to the stoke brought out intrepid riders to stand in line as early as 5 am. These people who at once seemed foolish proved to have the last laugh as the lines steadily grew to epic proportions as the clock ticked closer to first chair. Only the lucky group who won the annual first gondola raffle got the jump on them.
With lots of snow from last weeks huge dump and mild bluebird conditions at the summit it was set to be a great day. I met up with a crew of locals and ex locals to explore the mountain. Riding with a group Newfoundlanders made for chair rides almost as entertaining as the rides down.
With the opening having been so great I’m sure many are eagerly awaiting their next chance to ride the horse on December 5th and 6th, with the full opening scheduled for Friday December 11th. With top to bottom skiing (4,100 vertical feet, the highest in the Rockies), including terrain open in Crystal Bowl, Bowl Over, Mid Mountain and the Lower Mountain this looks to be another great season in Golden!
Don’t forget to pick up your Rockies Card before Dec 26 to save cash and get 3 free days of skiing at 4 great resorts. (Kicking Horse, Nakiska, Fernie and Kimberly)
